2. Remember My Device — Timing Matters

How tiny UX misfires can turn simple logins into mental gymnastics. The memo.

Login forms almost always ask whether to “Remember this device”, or “Keep me logged in”, etc.  Without fail, it comes after you enter your credentials—logically, at least, from a designer’s point of view… ten years ago.

By the time you get to that checkbox, the browser has usually already processed your login, auto-signing you in once credentials are filled. Tick the box? Too late. The account loads without registering your preference.

The moment when you could actually decide is already gone. I find myself frantically clicking that box mid-load, in vain, and then having to remember to do it “manually” next time—starting from the bottom of the form, in effect.

Now that we have these amazing password-generation and auto-population tools, interfaces should adjust: ask for decisions when they matter, not after the fact.

Consider this a memo to all UX and UI designers. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes before the next login form actually gets it… I’ll be sure to include an update here.
